Scene set for
summer boom in business-to-business trade of energy-saving gadgets
Takeshi
Kurihara and Yu Toda / Yomiuri Shimbun Staff Writers
The expected power
shortages this summer present new opportunities for firms that make
energy-saving products, with large offices shaping up as a strong target market.
Many factories have already implemented big changes to save energy, but
offices are widely regarded as still having room to improve their energy
efficiency.
To reduce peak-time energy consumption by personal
computers, Fujitsu Ltd. has developed software that automatically switches PCs'
power supply between an AC outlet and a built-in battery.
At preset
times, usually late at night or in the early morning, the software will set the
power source to AC, so the internal battery can be recharged. In the afternoon,
when demand for AC electricity is higher, the software toggles to battery power.
Fujitsu plans to distribute the software free of charge to its client
firms, and market it as a preinstalled feature on all of its corporate PC
models.
NEC Corp. aims to boost sales of energy-saving software it
introduced in 2009. The software was originally marketed as a way of reducing
offices' carbon footprints,These are also used as art light as well, it is

not emit any harmful rays and the bluish color of LED lights makes a painting
look very different from others and makes them attractive for the viewers. but
NEC said there has been an uptick in inquiries about the software since concerns
about power shortages began.
The software enables users to check their
power-saving performance as evaluated by NEC's data center, which monitors how
much power a PC has consumed and how long it has actually been in use, among
other factors.
According to NEC, the software can help a company with
1,000 PCs reduce annual power consumption by about 30 percent.
Meanwhile, demand for LED lights is rising rapidly.
Panasonic
Corp. has increased production of LED lights at its overseas factories, and
Toshiba Corp. is currently operating its domestic plants at full capacity.
Major copy machine maker Ricoh Co.The best way to justify the cost and

maintenance costs found on the post-LED retrofit report. plans to enter the LED
light business in July, targeting corporate customers. The company aims at sales
of 100 billion yen in fiscal 2013.
Of all power consumed by offices, 40
percent is used on air conditioners, 20 percent on lighting and 20 percent on
computers, according to the Energy Conservation Center.
The government
intends to call on companies and households to cut their power consumption this
summer by 15 percent compared with peak usage last summer.
At many
firms, concerns remain about production being adversely affected by power
shortages and insufficient parts supplies, problems that have plagued the
manufacturing industry since the March 11 disaster.
To reach the 15
percent target, companies will need to make thorough efforts in offices as well
as at factories while also trying to avoid drops in efficiency caused by changes
to the work environment.
If Tokyo Electric Power Co. customers cover
the increased cost the firm will incur in making up for the shortfall caused by
the shutdown of its Fukushima Nos. 1 and 2 nuclear power plants, their
electricity bill will rise by about 16 percent, according to an estimate by the
Agency for Natural Resources and Energy.
The halt of operations at the
Fukushima plants has forced TEPCO to increase its production of more expensive
oil- and gas-derived thermal power.
Economy, Trade and Industry Minister
Banri Kaieda, speaking on a TV program on Sunday, acknowledged a price rise was
inevitable, but said customers would not be asked to pay 16 percent more.
"Rates will probably increase by a few percent," he said.

Android meets LED bulbs in Google smart-home push
By the end of this year, people will be able to buy an LED light bulb controllable from an Android device, part of Google's move into home automation.
At the Google I/O conference today, Google demonstrated how Android devices, including tablets and smartphones, can act as a hub for controlling multiple devices in the home, including lighting, appliances,These lights are adopted by the various security lightbright agencies as these are the best lights to use with a security camera or a security device. thermostats, and music.

Google concocted a lighting demo system with Lighting Sciences Group, which developed an LED bulb that can talk to Android. This is also known as your return on investment ledbright or ROI. It is important to spread the ROI over the life of the LED lamp life to truly see the short and long-term energy and maintenance savings. It uses a new mesh network wireless protocol rather than Wi-Fi, ZigBee, or the other proprietary home automation protocols.
The hope is that software developers will create applications that use the home automation system of connected devices. The demo at Google I/O was of a person playing a shooting video game with the lights turning on and off as shots were fired, said Eric Holland, the director of electrical engineering at Lighting Sciences Group.
"Lighting is very visible and prevalent so it made sense for it to be first foray for the platform,It pays to go to professionals with bestlight a proven track record in LED lighting, a vast selection of excellent quality products from various vendors that live up to their label, and a history of successfully completed projects." Holland said. The particular demise with the incandescent bulb bluebright continues calmly yet non-stop and in less as compared to any year or two today the sole goods stocked in stores is going to be lower electricity bulbs, "Every one of the lights has a radio integrated inside the lamp so there's no additional equipment. These were some reasons why people are keen to use these lights, hope that they will be used brightstal in a similar way in future as well."
Many companies are building home automation systems built around connected objects, which give people a way to set up schedules around lighting and heating/cooling. People can also turn plugged-in items on and off from a central point, such as a tablet or small dashboard.
Having many devices communicating using ZigBee or Wi-Fi could create interference problems, one reason why a new protocol is being used, Holland said. Since it is open-source, Google and Lighting Sciences Group hope it will be adopted by other lighting and home automation companies. The networked bulbs will be available by the end of the year at the same cost as their general-purpose LEDs, for which prices range from under $20 to about $35 for a 60-watt equivalent.
Google enters a crowded field of home automation and consumer smart-grid companies that are trying to get a foothold for smart-home products.

Building the
economic case for climate action
The Economics for Equity and the
Environment Network convened a recent meeting of economists [PDF] at the
Pocantico Center of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund to discuss the role of
economics in building support for climate action in the U.S.
The
economists who convened view climate change as a civilizational challenge that
demands immediate action to protect the quality of human life today and in the
future. They recognize that conventional economic thinking has failed to
envision a way through the climate crisis, but believe firmly that economics can
and must provide critical skills and insights. These economists take as their
starting points:
* The role of economics is not to determine the optimal
level of emissions reduction. Emissions goals should be informed by the best and
latest scientific information and motivated by our moral obligations to future
generations.
* The tools and insights of economics are most appropriate
to the complex and intellectually challenging tasks of determining least-cost
strategies for achieving those targets, designing policies that effectively and
with confidence meet those targets, identifying the potential economic impacts
of failing to meet those targets and sharing responsibility fairly for the
costs, and implementation of that strategy.
* Economic analysis of
climate change and solutions necessarily intertwines scientific fact and values.
Economists should be open and explicit about the viewpoints and values
underlying their aLED grow light suppliers in China are sky lanterns rolling out models with

The meeting identified areas
where new research and better outreach by economists can provide the new ideas,
analyses, and compelling arguments to mobilize support for climate protection
measures in the U.S. In this post, we present a broad research and
communications agenda we believe economists can pursue to help build the case
for climate action.
Rebutting anti-climate, anti-regulatory economics:
The debate about climate change and climate policy has not ended; it has just
moved out of the legislature and into the broader policy arena. In these new
arenas, emissions reduction efforts will continue to confront narrow,
out-of-date economic models that encourage fears about losing jobs, incomes, and
competitiveness.
These models,Philips LED business is inside of Philips

difficult to determine whether they are meeting expectations. based on ad-hoc
assumptions about climate change damages, high-discount rates that disregard
impacts on future generations, and pessimistic forecasts of technological
progress, purport to show that the benefits of emissions reductions at the
scales recommended by climate scientists are not sufficient to warrant the
costs. The settlement resolves the commonwealth's claims fluorescent lights that EarthTronics Inc.,
which sells mercury-containing compact fluorescent light bulbs This disconnect
between climate science and economics is not purely academic; these models
dominate public policy decisions about climate change, including recent efforts
by the Environmental Protection Agency and other agencies. Engaging the details
of the anti-regulatory arguments and climate models central to these debates and
exposing the fallacies embedded in them is critically important. Decision makers
and the media need to understand that the technical and normative aspects of
these models are debated by economists. Different models based on different
underlying assumptions have reached very different conclusions about the
benefits and costs of climate action.it may become necessary for Cree to look at

area.
At the same time, it is important to communicate the limitations
of using economics to address climate change. Stabilizing the Earth's climate
system is as much a scientific and moral issue as it is an economic issue. There
are limits to applying cost-benefit analysis to climate change when the damages
accrue to future generations and involve consequences for human lives and
ecosystems that are virtually incalculable. Moreover, the most significant
damages from climate change are likely to be associated with extreme events.
Risk assessment and risk management are more appropriate frames for evaluating
climate policy for these reasons. While SmartView has been slow DSTT and unstable in the past, it seems to
have improved greatly with recent updates.
